Review: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

Earlier this week, our editor Karen, my eldest child (Susie) and I were invited to The Moms screening event of The Sponge Bob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, featuring Sponge Bob and Patrick!  While I was looking forward to attending the event itself, I wasn’t so sure about Sponge Bob.  Don’t get me wrong- my kids seem to be glued to the TV whenever it comes on, but I am often reluctant to chose this show over some other programs for it’s content.  Well, I am happy to report I was pleasantly surprised with the Sponge Bob movie.  I knew my daughter would love it- after all it had great colors, animation, songs and general Sponge Bob silliness.  But, I was hardly expecting to hear Sponge Bob singing about teamwork- a major theme throughout the movie!  Sponge Bob talks about teamwork and honesty while he (of course) saves the day.

The Sponge Bob movie is the story of the demise and saving of Bikini Bottom when the recipe for Krabby Patty’s goes missing.   While the movie is largely animated, a good portion of it is indeed, “out of water.”  During the out of water portion, Sponge Bob and his friends become adorable super hero versions of themselves, who battle the thief of the Krabby Patty recipe, played by none other than Antonio Banderas!  You heard that right Moms, Antonio Banderas!  Albeit a scruffy pirate version of his usual handsome self.  In the end I walked away feeling good about watching the movie with my daughter.  It was entertaining for both of us and had good lessons to boot.

The Sponge Bob movie is out in theaters this Friday February 6th!  I would suggest you go see it with your family.  It’s worth noting the movie is available in 3D and that’s how wee saw it.  My daughter can be a bit of a scaredy cat so I was worried about the 3D but she loved it.  The 3D aspect was mild and not threatening- think bubbles floating over the audience.

In addition to the movie screening we also learned that Sponge Bob is one of the feature characters on the Nickelodeon cruises with Norwegian Cruise line.  What could be better than a cruise that would entertain the kids for you!  For more information visit http://www.ncl.com/freestyle-cruise/nickelodeon
